Smoky Wood Studios – Bringing Nature Into Your Home, One Pyrography Piece at a Time

Hey there,

something I learned more and more these past four years is, just how nature can be a powerful source of inspiration for your creative work.

As we are heading into the fall season, there is a burst of colors happening but more than that, there are shapes, patterns, and textures that can spark new ideas and perspectives. Spend time outdoors to observe and connect with the natural environment, can inspire your creative projects.

My pyrography art is all about nature, and when I feel stuck or just need a bit of a break, heading out for a hike has been a great way to free my mind just a bit and allow it to take in the sounds and sights of the trail I am hiking. I’ve taken pictures of roots that could turn into an art piece later down the road. One of my favorite projects, that I am currently working on is a series of Virginia wildlife animals inspired by hiking a local trail where I encountered several animals, like a bear. Nature has an endless supply of inspiration waiting to be discovered.

But it also has helped me sort out my coaching business, what I want to focus on, and how I will get there, like writing this newsletter and offering a few ways I can help you.

Creative Challenge: Spend time in nature and create something inspired by it. Here’s how:

  • Go Outside: Visit a park, garden, forest, beach, or any natural setting that appeals to you.
  • Observe: Take note of the colors, shapes, textures, and patterns you see.
  • Document: Sketch, photograph, or write about what you observe.
  • Create: Use these observations as a foundation for a new creative project, whether it’s a painting, poem, sculpture, or any other medium.

If art is not your medium this is a great way to stretch yourself a little bit and if nothing else, going outside is really good for you. Who knows what ideas will pop in your head, or problems you’re going to solve because you had a brilliant thought out while walking.

Resource Recommendation: Nature journals or guides can enhance your outdoor explorations. Books like “The Laws Guide to Nature Drawing and Journaling” by John Muir Laws or “Keeping a Nature Journal” by Clare Walker Leslie provide tips and techniques for documenting your observations and finding inspiration in the natural world.

Stay wild-hearted!

Cheers,

Petra
