How do you feel about deadlines?

Using deadlines can drive creativity. Deadlines create a sense of urgency that can help you stay focused and motivated. They push you to prioritize your creative projects and get things done. Setting realistic deadlines for your work can enhance productivity and ensure steady progress. But they work best when you have some accountability.

Inspiration Corner: Back in college, everything was driven by a deadline. Ten-page papers were due on Sundays, and if you know anything about people who are neurodivergent, some of us write our best papers on the day they are due. I use that awareness about myself to keep meeting my deadlines, whether I am writing a book, creating a coloring book, or a new wildlife pyrography series. Having deadlines helps me get shit done. But as I mentioned above, when you have accountability, like a partner or a group of some kind, you’re more likely to meet that deadline and not make excuses. I meet with my accountability partner every Monday and have been for the last 8 years.

Creative Challenge: Set a deadline for your next project. Here’s how:

• Define the Project: Clearly outline the scope and objectives of your project.
• Set a Realistic Deadline: Choose a deadline that challenges you but is also achievable.
• Break It Down: Divide the project into smaller tasks and set deadlines for each.
• Stick to It: Hold yourself accountable to these deadlines and adjust if necessary.
